Hi! I am Amber Aslakson, but most people just call me Mrs. A. This is my 11th year working for Byron Public Schools. I began by working at the Elementary School and have been at the Middle School for the past 9 years. I love working at the Middle School and with adolescents.
I live in Rochester with my amazing husband. Mr. A. allows me to keep a collection of school supplies rivaling any store in the area and purchase tons of books for my classroom. He is a software engineer. We have been married 8 years this summer. He went to school at Michigan Tech in the UP.
I am originally from Dayton, OH. I loved being a kid there. I grew up playing soccer, dancing ballet, acting in community theater, and in Girl Scouts. In high school I joined the color guard that performed with the marching band. I spun year round in guard. Band was a great experience for me. I met my husband back in high school because of band. I continue to coach color guard in Rochester.
I went to college at the University of Dayton. It was an awesome experience! I was a part of a great co-hort of thirteen women as I completed my special education degree. In college I participated in and later was the president of a tutoring club. We provided tutoring at a local residential treatment center for children. While there I worked in the ICU which was a residence for children with significant emotional or behavioral disorders. I loved working with these students. In college I also worked in the technology department teaching courses to staff.
I often spend my time off visiting family. My mom, grand parents, and other family still live in Dayton. My younger brother lives in St. Louis with his wife and adorable dog Brutus. My in-laws live in Michigan along with my sister-in-law and her husband.
Over the past 5 years I have become a runner! It is exciting to be able to say that! I started from nothing and have now ran 19 half marathons and hope to run more! The half marathon is probably my favorite distance. I also have run numerous 5ks, 10ks, relays, and more. Two years ago I competed in my first triathlon and have been hooked ever since! I have grown to love open water swimming and biking.
When I am not running around, coaching, or teaching I also love to scrapbook. I have documented many of my travels through scrapbooking. I love to spend time with my friends being crafty, especially when we can get away for retreat weekends.
I also am a huge fan of a few sports teams. I cheer for the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, and the Dayton Flyers. I am also a big fan of the Rochester Ice Hawks and you can find me at the REC Center rink side many weekend nights October-March.
In Byron I serve as a Digital Learning Coach, on the Wellness Committee, and a member of the Assitive Technology Team.
